lighting a basement stariwell

I want lights in the stairwell that do not interfere with carrying furniture up and down the stairs. I also want my kids to be able to change bulbs. Lastly, I would like recessed product that can fit in a 2 x 4 wall.

Is this an open 2 x 4 wall? If so, how about low profile, surface mounted fluorescents mounted inside the stud cavities? Like the kind you'd find under kitchen cabinets.

Or if it is sheetrocked, you could look for recessed lighting, normally used in ceilings, but mount it so the light is projected horizontally instead of vertically. Not like typical round recessed cans, they don't really spread the light out enough for this application, but something with a larger square lens opening.
