recessed lighting

I have recessed lighting in the condo I purchased, and also several ceiling fans, and I cannot get the bulbs out in one piece. After the bulb breaks the screw-in part remains in the socket. How can I get these out, and how do I prevent further occurances?

With the electricity off (at the circuit breaker) use a pair of needle nose pliers inserted into the remains and then spread open, or use half a potato that you press over the remains.

To prevent this in the future, use better quality bulbs to begin with.

What is beter than Phillips? Soome of these bulbs have been viable since I moved in 5 years ago, and just blew. I had a heck of a time getting one out that I put in , again a phillips, in the kitchen. Is there any thing that can be pput on the threads?
