Ceiling fan light switch not working

We have a ceiling fan in our bedroom (don't know brand or age-we rent and have been here 5+ years) and the light quit working. The fan works fine and is not controlled by wall switch. We just replaced the dimmer wall switch and the light still does not work. Bulb changed also. My husband figures it is the chain switch on the fan and wondered if he cut the chain and connected the 2 black wires and did away with using the chain to turn on, if this would work? We never used the chain to turn on/off light anyway, but chain was pulled when problem started. Any input would be great. Thanks.

You can take the switch out of the circuit and wire nut the two conductors together (since you use a wall switch/dimmer)
