Bad Hum Job

Hello,

Do all florescents hum?

Had some in the kitchen of our former house and didn't hear a thing.

Bought 6, 2 ea 4' lights w/electronic balast (sylvania), from Lowes and they all hum! Was going to dress them up with trim to make them look nice because my wife loves the daylight tubes and I love the savings of more light for the wattage used.

That hum is irritating, especially since my wife loves classical music and the humming is out of tune with some of the quieter passages.

Thanks......

Hopro of Deland, FL

Flourescent ballasts have a sound rating. You might have bought a cheap one (or the fixture came with a cheap one). Try a different ballast.

As Ron said, ballasts have a sound rating, A through E. If minimum hum is important, make sure you have an A. You might find it as easy and cheap to buy new fixtures rather than new ballasts.

I'm surprised!
I have worked with Sylvania ballasts, and have used them to replace old noisy units. Please tell us the model number of the ballast, and light fixture. Are there ballasts for traditional T12 or modern T8 bulbs? T8 is superior. There are some 'electronic' ballasts floating around for t12 systems. The sylvania number will idenify the ballast, it may be a residental version, not commercial. Resi ballasts have a tendancy to be junk.

You may also want to check to make sure the ballast are mounted tightly to the light fixture and insure you have a good ground.
