Outlet Help

Hello.

I am new to electrical work. As a matter of fact, all I am trying to do it install several outlets in my basement. I have issues though

I have 3 rooms and about 15 outlets (I bought the home witht the electrical wired, but no outlets or switches in the basement).

In one room, the 3 outlets work fine. The second room, 1 of the 6 work. The 3rd room, none work.

What could be the problem? I have followed the instructions from a black and decker how to book. But I am lost!

Basically, in all the non working outlets, a tester lights up when in the hot and ground slots. But nothin lights up in the hot and neutral. Why is this?

If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

How did you connect the receptacles? Did you stick the wires in the back holes?
This is a well known no-no. It is legal but not a very sound connection.

Give us a little better description of what you did.

I have tried both ways. Now I am using the screws in some. I have checked the wires, most are middle of the run outlets. Can you help me with what I should do for those?

I can remove all and use the screws instead. I have black to hot and white to silver. And of course the ground attached. Should I use pigtails?

You have an open neutral. This is a poor connection of a white wire somewhere. Recheck these connections, in all the outlets (both the working ones and the non-working ones). It only takes one bad connection.

Thanks John. I will check them.

One other question, on the outlet, with a pigtail, does it matter which brass and which silver terminal I use? Across or diagonal?

Assuming nobody has broken out the tab that connects the two screws, then you may connect the wire to either screw. They are equivalent.

Here is where I am at.

I have power to an outlet. Then up to 2 switches. One goes outside to a light, and there is power when the switch is on, and none when off.

Next outlet, nothing. I have hot, but the neutrals do not show power. I mean, there is no pass through power.

Any thoughts?

And thanks for your help.

John,

Thank you. I found the neutral. It was not in the loop. As soon as I hooked it in, EVERYTHING worked.

Thanks for you patience for a novice.
