Red face Ceiling Fan NIGHTMARE!!

I have a major ceiling fan issue!! I had to remove my ceiling fan when doing some minor repairs. When I loosened the set screws, the fan nearly fell to the floor. I caught it before it hit, but it came unwired. I live in a 60 year old house and the wiring is not color coded, therefore both of the power wires are white. How can I determine which is white and which is black, or does it matter? Thanks!!!

Yes, it matters.

Give us a complete inventory of the wires in the ceiling box. Is two white wires the whole story? No other wires tucked into the back of the box somewhere?

Then give us a complete inventory of the wires coming out of the fan.

There's a strong chance that I'm then going to tell you to go to Home Depot and spend $15 on a voltage "tick" tester.

P.S. Must have been really exciting when that fan fell!

You would be safest to buy a tick tester, as John suggests. However, with some additional wire and a cheaper neon light type tester you could also make the determination.
