garbage disposals

Hi Folks,
I think my disposal is either broken or "jammed". It won't work but is making a humming nose when the switch is ON.
It plugs in under the sink, I took it apart and there's no drainage problem.
Anybody familiar with how to use an Allen Wrench to possibly
"fix"a gear problem or see if I can get my disposal going again?
Thanks,
spikedog

Hello: spikedog

Since there isn't an electrical problem, based on the motor operating, a jam is possible. Take a long screw drive and see if the cutting blades turn inside the disposal.

If the cutters trur and the motor runs, unplug the unit and seperate the motor from the cutters. Inbetween the two is a break away part, of which I forgot the name of...

That part can be replaced as a seperate unit or part. It is there for that purpose. Allows motor to spin but not the cutters. Replacing it should resolve the problem.

That part is available at any small appliance parts store in your area. Listed in the phone book. Take the brand name, model and serial numbers to get the correct part for that unit.

"My Two Cents."...

Thanks for the advice- I'll give it a try. The blades are mobile/not jammed.
