Can I replace any receptacle with a GFCI?

Can I replace any receptacle with a GFCI or are there special considerations? I have an outlet in my yard which gets wet from my sprinklers. I want to replace it with a GFCI.

Yes you can..and that outlet should have a GFCI installed since its getting wet. I presume that box is an outdoor box with a waterproof cover? If not, it should be. Is this outlet the one youre considering to power your pond pump?

Thanks Jatco. Yes it is an ourdoor box with a cover.
It is an existing outlet. I am trying to run a line from it to the other side on the yard to install another outlet to power the pump.
