voltage testers
I need to know about how to use voltage testers, do you connect both leads to the terminals for a wall switch? Or do you put one on the terminal and one on a metal surface?

What are you trying to determine? Which switch terminal is the "hot" one perhaps?
In any case, a voltage tester looks at voltage potential (or simply volts) between two points. If you are trying to determine which screw terminal is hot, turn the switch off. Carefully place the black lead to the ground wire and touch the red lead to either terminal. The terminal tied to the source will indicate 120 volts. The other will indicate zero volts and it's wire will lead to the light/switched receptacle.
If you're looking to determine something else, let us know what that is.
