Florescent Light Hum

I have a florescent light that is silent when first turned on. Then, perhaps after a half-hour it starts to hum. I suspect it is a heat related problem but I am not sure. What should I look at to track down the source of the problem? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure all flourescent lights hum a little bit. If I'm not mistaken there's a rating for the ballasts, with the cheaper ones humming more.

It's the ballast that hums. First you need to find the ballast. Remove the bulbs. Then there's usually some kind of panel between the bulbs you have to remove (usually done without tools) to expose the ballast. Tighten the screws that hold down the ballast if they are loose. Then read the tiny print on the ballast to see what the sound rating is. If it is other than "A", consider a new fixture or a new ballast if the hum bothers you. Often a new fixture is as cheap as a new ballast. Look for a better sound rating.
