Type of wire to buy for basement remodel

I am finishing my basement and getting close to running electricity. I was going to install switches, receptacles, and fixture and have my cousin who is an electrician come and wire everything up correctly. He told me to go and buy 12/2 wire. When I went to Home Depot, they have that round Romex and then some flat stuff. What is the difference and what do the colors of wire mean? Example, white vs. yellow? I'm only going to have pretty standard stuff down there as far as load goes. Thanks

The color means nothing. Romex is a brand name. Different brands use different colors for the various sizes, but there is no standardization between brands. What you want is 12-2 NM-B. The color and shape are not important. Go with what you want.

Round is 12/3, flat is 12/2 (probably).
Yellow is 12-gauge, white is 14-gauge (probably).
