reversable motor wiring

I bought a linear actuator off ebay for a project I have and it has a simple 115v reversable motor with a three wire hookup. White-common, black-clockwise, red-counterclockwise. When I hook it up all I get is a hum. It is a new unit. I took it apart to check the transmission for a bind and all is good. Motor shaft spins freely. I tried a capacitor in case the motor needed it to start up but that did not work. So I have a new motor that won't run and am looking for advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ah yes Ebay. How do you know it works? Perhaps you bought a white elephant.

It doesn't work Bob, that's the problem. Ebay is fraut with risk yes but I have managed to stay on top of the curve so far. Just looking for someone who knows electric motors and possible fixes. Thanks for the reply.
