Underground electric cables

I was able to find information on how electricity travels to homes using overhead wires, but nowhere on the Net have I been able to find a simple explanation of how it travels in underground cables.

Does it go underground at the power plant's transmission substation? Does it travel on high-voltage transmission lines to a substation where it then is routed underground?

I'd be very grateful if someone could direct me to a simple website that explains this and shows pictures.

Thank you for any help.

It's a problem running high voltage underground since it's almost impossible to get the required separation between the conductors. This site might help a little.
