bathroom switch near shower?

Hi,

I've searched the code, but cannot find an answer to this one.

Can you locate the bathroom light switch within a reaching distance of the tub / shower? If not, what does the distance need to be?

Thanks!

Common sense says not to put it too close, but the code is mute on this issue (which is why you didn't find it).

I've run into this on residential build outs. The only thing I've found is 404.4 in the NEC 2008 book. It's one of those 'could be related, but???' things. Strange that it does not have a requirement for distance.

As long as the switch is not in the shower or above the footprint of the tub or shower it is Code compliant.

It's not really an issue because it's a plastic switch with a plastic cover or grounded metal cover. You'd pretty much have to spray the hand shower right at it to get enough water inside to be hazardous. I really doubt that simply flipping it with a wet hand presents any real danger.
