Can't find prewire

Just moved into a fairly new house(6 yrs old), about a year ago.
I want to install some lighting in the living room, but there is
no existing light fixture. I noticed a switch on the wall that doesn't
appear to be controlling anything, but is wired nonetheless.
I checked all of the surrounding receptacles, but all have power
regardless of whether or not the switch is on. It appears that
the previous owner had a prewire for lighting. How can I locate
this wire in the above ceiling? I don't have access to a crawlspace/
attic. Thanks for the help!

Just a thought; my girlfriend (now my wife) had a similar situation in her 3 yr old house, but she had a ceiling fan (which you didn't mention). When I removed the bottom cover to add a light kit, I discovered that the switch in question was wired to serve the light kit. Made my job easier (and made me look a little smarter!).

You may need to recheck all your receptacles again. Sometimes only 1/2 of a receptacle is switched. Check both the top and bottom separately with the switch off.
