breaker problem

i am running a small air compressor in my garage.the outlet is a gfi and the circuit breaker is a 15 amp breaker.the 15 amp breaker keeps tripping when the compressor turns on.should i move up to a 20 amp breaker? if so,what is the minimum wire gauge that i should be running to use a 20 amp breaker? anybody else run into this problem? thank you.

Depends on how small "small" is, and what the manufacturer recommends. Do you have access the the manufacturer's literature?

If all the wiring on the circuit is #12 copper, then you can change the breaker to 20 amps. But if there is any #14 on the circuit, then you'll need to replace the wiring first.
