Electrical panel location question

Does anyone know what the NEC states as acceptable locations for an electrical panel in a single family residence. I am buying a house and the panel is currently located in the closet of the 4th bedroom. I'm not a code expert but I question whether or not this is legal I know I have read that a sub-panel is not allowed in a closet but unsure if the Main panel also is unallowed. I am questioniing the location mainly because the 4th bedroom seems to have been a home owner added addition and doubt it was ever inspected before. If any one could help me out with these answers and even give the article number in the NEC i would be greatly appreciative.. Thanks in advance

If this house was built today, it would not be allowed to have an electrical panel in a clothes closet. The article from the 2002 NEC is 240.24(D).

I would strongly encourage you to have the home professionally inspected, and I would consult the city permit records. If this work was done without a permit, there could be hundreds of other violations. But even a thorough inspection cannot find violations which have been hidden behind the wall. The city would be within its rights to demand that all unpermitted work be removed.
