Closet Lighting

Can you use recessed lighting in a closet? Does the NEC require that closet lights have covers?

Because closets are full of easily combustible materials, the electrical code has very restrictive rules about lighting in closets. Recessed lights are not only allowed in closets, they are generally a good idea and the rules for recessed fixtures are more lax than for surface mount fixtures. The edge of the recessed fixture must be at least 6 inches (measured horizontally only, ignoring the vertical measurement) from the edge of any closet shelf. The downside is that a recessed fixture doesn't spread the light around as well as a surface mount fixture, so dark spots are more likely.

Because they burn cool, fluorescent fixtures are also good ideas for closets.
