wiring in metal studs

Several questions about wiring a residence that has metal studs.
1- Can NM cable be used
2- Does the hole in the metal stud satisfy the support needed by NEC?
3- Any limits as to how high from the floor the cable has to be placed?
4- Does the metal stud still require a metal plate covering the cable on the face of the stud?
5- How many NM 12-2 cables can be run through a 1 1/2" hole in the stud?
Any assistance and advise appreciated.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. No
4. Only if the edge of the hole is within 1.25" of the face of the stud.
5. A lot, probably more than you need. But for ampacity derating reasons, don't run more than four cables through a series of holes.

Use the plastic protection plugs in the holes to avoid damaging the cable.
