Battery charging

When charging a 12v battery, where the voltage is at 11.8v, would you charge at a 2 amp rate or 6 amp rate ? And for how long ? And what should the charging meter read when the battery is fully charged ?

I believe that for a 12V battery, like in a car, the voltage should be greater than 12V. More along the lines of 13.2V. When the battery is fully charged, the current meter will go down to 0A. If you are reading 11.8V after charging, I would suggest that you have a dead cell in your battery. If this is an automobile battery, take it to an autoparts store and have it checked.

2-2-2-4 extra ground?

I finally got the UB cable for the shop. Code says 2-2-4 aluminum is OK but the only wire they had at Lowes was 2-2-2-4. I'm familiar with how to wire service with 3 wires but what do I do with this extra wire? Is it supposed to wire onto the regular neutral bar? The wire is made for mobile homes which probably have different requirements but I paid for the extra wire so I'm gonna use it. Probably can't have too many grounds.. Thanks. I forgot to mention that it's going from a 100 amp breaker on the house to a breaker box in the shop. I have a 220 v welder and a 22o v compressor but mostly just lights and hand tools.Read More

GFCI on switched recepticle

I read a discussion about upgrading two prong receps to three prongs. I opted for the GFCI at the first outlet in the series and regular three prongs down stream. In one of the circuits, the last recepticle in the series was connected through a switch. So there were 2 two-wire feeds into the box. There was the hot wire and its nuetral, then the other wire had its neutral hooked up. However the black wire was not stripped. It simply had a twist cap on it. I assumed that this was a load wire that dead ended. I hooked the one black to the hot terminal, and the two white wires to the nuetral terminals. The GFCI reset perfectly. However, when I plug anything into the last recepticle and turn the switch on, it trips the GFCI. What have I done wrong and how do I fix it. JoeRead More
