knob and tubing and ceiling fans
how do i test a 2 black wire kob and tubing set up for hot and neutral? i recently installed a ceiling fan and hooked the wires up and the uplight worked but when i turned on the fan the motor blew (sparks and smoke). so i am trying to research this out. any help would be greatly appreciated

2 wire knob and tube has a hot and a return, just like regular wiring.
You apparently did not connect the fan wires properly. The hot for the fan and the light go to the hot wire, the return (or returns) for the fan and light goes (go) to the neutral wire.

Other than connecting the fan to 240 volts, I don't know of any miswiring that can smoke the motor. So something else is going on here other than a simple miswire. Give us some further clues if you can.
If you have K&T, I suggest you invest $15 at your home center in a voltage tick tester. It will tell you which of the two wires is the hot and which is the neutral. You'll find this useful over and over again.
