Question Replacing Light Switch

I live in an older home, and want to replace a light switch. I bought a new switch, and when I removed the old switch, I noticed that there are three wires attached to it. The new switch only has two screws for the wires. Did I buy the wrong type of switch?

Yes. Unless one of the wires is a bare ground you need a 3way switch. The light must be controlled from more than one location?

What does the switch control, and is that obect also controlled by a second switch? Your old switch sounds like a 3 way where as the replacement is a standard on / off switch.

Thank You both. The light can be turned on from a different location.
