Angry Electrical Circuit Problem

Cellar light will not operate from both switches. It will turn on with kitchen switch and turn off with the garage switch, but will not turn back on with the kitchen switch unless the garage switch is in the other position. Just bought the house built in 1959. I suspect one of the switches is NG. Any ideas?

Sounds like someone replaced the switches, but did so incorrectly. It is easy to get mixed up with 3 way switches, especially if you just try to wire them like the original switches being replaced, as not all switrches have the same physical layout of their screw terminals.

What you need to do is to open the switch boxes and determine the wiring that is in place at each at each switch box. Assuming that three way switches were used for the replacement, this is a fairly simple task.
