Stove outlet

I am replacing the stove outlet and need to know how to wire the new one. The old one was removed before I could see how it was wired. There are two gold and one silver connections. Which is ground?

Thanks

Why was the old outlet removed?

Your best advice is to get a tester and verify which wire is which.

Is it a gas stove or electric? What kind of plug does the stove have?

Art.250.126, I.D. of device terminals reads-----" the device terminal for (the Equiptment Ground) shall be indentified by"---- " A Green, not readily removable screw-----"

The receptacle you describe does not have such a terminal, and if this type of receptacle is connected, you will have to use the Neutral ( White wire) conductor for Grounding the metal frame of the appliance. This type of Grounding connection is permissible if certain requirements are satisfied.

Stove outlet

The old was removed because it was broken. The new outlet has a gold lead, silver and another gold, in that order. The wire is black, black, ground.

Thanks

One requirement for using the Neutral as a Equiptment Grounding Conductor on a range-connection is----- "The Grounded ( Neutral) conductor is un-insulated and (is) a Type SE Service-Entance cable conductor."

You should try to verify if this indeed is Type SE cable. This type of cable is oval is shape, and covered with a grey cloth or a grey plastic sheath.

Are you sure that the outlet is an exact replacement? You cannot change the type of outlet (say for a new range) without making sure that the wiring and circuit breaker are rated for the stove.

This outlet will connect the same as any other outlet. The black wires go to the brass terminals, the ground wire goes to the silver terminal. You can prove this by looking at the wiring diagram that came with the new outlet. It will tell you how to attach it.
