Door Bell Problems....Please help.

Hi,
I was replacing the 3rd floor apt door bell button on my rental unit tonight.
We acidently put the screw through the wires behind it...
The chime was humming, then started smelling funny.
Now it just hums when you hit the button? Is the chime unit ruined?
What should I do,can it be fixed at all? Thanks

I'd start by pulling new wire. If you damaged it you have to replace it anyway, then if that didn't fix it, yes you'll have to replace the chime.

use the old wire to pull the new if at all possible.....especially on the 3rd floor...ouch...

If it hums when you push the button, but is quiet when the button is not pushed, the wiring may be okay now, but overheated the coil in the chime while the wiring was shorted. If this chime has terminals for front and rear doors, ( I doubt there is a rear door in use ) switch the F wire to the R terminal. It should give you a single "ding" instead of " ding - dong" . If that works, the wiring should be okay and you could replace the chime at your leasure.
