closet light - code question

Hello,

I can't quite remember - I'd like to put a flourscent light in the closet, would prefer an exposed bulb, surface mount. I know this has to be 6" from storage, no problem there. Can the bulb be exposed w/surface mount, or do I have to get an enclosed bulb? Thanks!

Incandescent bulbs must be enclosed.
Fluorescent bulbs need not be.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know where code stands on use of surface-mounted compact fluorescents in the closet? Does code differentiate between compact fluorescents (the ones that look like normal incandescent lamps) and normal (i.e. 18" tube) ones? The only thing I can think of is that if you are going to place a compact fluorescent in a keyless lampholder on the ceiling, it may invite someone in the future to replace it with an incandescent lamp.

The code refers to the fixture, they don't care what lamp you put in it. If it is a fixture specifically designed for a compact fluorescent then its fine. If it's an incandescent fixture, like a keyless, with a CF bulb then it's illegal.
