What do I connect the red wire to?

I replaced my old fan, that had a light and did not work with a new fan that does not have a light. We have a vanity with a light to light the bathroom with its own switch. The fan has its own switch. I thought that the red wire, which is now not connected to anything, controlled the light on the fan. So I didn't hook it up. But when I turned the switch on for the fan nothing happened. So I turned the switch on for the vanity light and both the vanity and the fan went on. So now after all that my question is :What do I connect the red wire to, black or white? Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.

So I assume we're talking about a bathroom exhaust fan and not a ceiling fan, right?

The red wire is often the switched hot. But to really answer your question, we need more information. Start by giving a complete inventory of all the wires in the box: how many cables, how many wires in each, what color wires and how many of each color, and how they are/were connected.
