Wiring Dishwasher and Garbage disposal on same line

Hi there,

I have a line coming directly from the circuit breaker, and i would like to branch the line off so i can install an outlet and switch to operate a garbage disposal. I would like the line to remain hot for the dishwasher, but be able to turn the garbage disposal on and off at the receptacle. I purchased a new receptacle and switch, ran the line that was already there to a central box then ran a wire back to the dishwasher, and one to the receptacle, wire nutting the whites together and hot's together, then i ran off the receptacle to the switch.

I tried a few differ ways and just about every time, the breaker pops. What am i doing wrong. Please help

Jonathan

There are multiple ways of doing this correctly, and as you know, multiple ways of doing it incorrectly.

You have wired a switch loop for your disposal. That's fine. At the switch, simple connect white and black to the two screws on the switch.

At the receptacle, special care is needed. Connect the black wire coming from the junction box to the white wire going to the switch. These two wires do not connect to the receptacle in any way. Then connect the remaining black wire (from the switch) to a brass screw, and the remaining white wire (from the junction box) to a silver screw.

I left off description of the grounding wires, but I'm guessing you can handle that.
