Circuit Breaker Won't Reset

Circuit Breaker Won't Reset
Today the circuit breaker for the family room tripped. When I tried to reset it it simply tripped again. This happened four times. Could there be something wrong with the cirduit breaker itself? I checked to see what was plugged in and there was nothing plugged in that would have caused the circuit to trip that I'm aware of. Any suggestions?

First, unplug everything on this circuit and turn off all switches. Be thorough. When in doubt about what circuit something is on, unplug it anyway. Then see if you can reset the breaker.
When you say that it trips again, do you mean it trips in a tenth of a second, in two seconds, in thirty seconds, in a minute, in an hour?

The breaker trips immediately.
First and foremost I want to make sure I won't cause any fires. This is happening while we are in the middle of a Halloween get together (lots of kids). So I'm trying to remedy the problem as quickly as I can, but I'm no electrician.

Maybe one of those kids stuck something in a receptacle. Or an appliance plugged in is malfunctioning (did somebody drop something?).
With a bunch of kids there, I think you must be conservative--when in doubt, leave the breaker off.
Don't just keep trying to reset it without investigation or you may cause what you fear.
So "immediately" means a fraction of a second?

Yes, a fraction of a second. I will check the outlets again, unplugging everything. One of the things plugged into these outlets is the big screen TV. After everyone leaves I will try resetting.
If you think of anything else I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

Circuit Breaker Won't Reset
After unplugging everything I was able to get the circuit breaker to reset. I think we have a bad electric Halloween pumpkin. Some of those things are so cheaply made that it doesn't take much to break them. Thanks for all your help.
