Re-connecting old electric?
We're remodeling our bedroom & bathroom in our circa-1850s home. We tore out the lathe & plaster walls and discovered that all the electric to the upstairs was run off a junction box from the same breaker the old bedroom electric was on. The existing wiring was re-done in the 1950s and has a circuit box, but it's only got 2 wires inside a flexible conduit.
I've got the bedroom and bathroom completely re-wired and will run the lights and bedroom recipticles off one 15 amp breaker and all the bathroom recepticles off a separate 20 amp breaker with a GFI.
Here's my question, until we remodel the rest of the house (over the next year or two), I need to reconnect the existing upstairs wiring so we have power. When I run a 14 awg wire from the box to a junction box that will reconnect to the old 2 wire (non-grounded) wiring, what do I do with the ground wire from the box? Just connect it to the junction box and leave the existing wires in the flexible conduit as is?? Is there any way to ground the old recepticles upstairs, or does grounding the metal junction box which is connected to the metal conduit enough??
Thanks!!!

I'll definately call the inspector to find out about this, and I'll ask him about the AFCI as well. Hopefully I won't have to rip out more walls in order to pull out the old wiring. This started off as a project to get a sink in our bathroom, and has turned into a complete bedroom/bathroom remodeling project. Hopefully it won't turn into a whole house remodeling...
Thanks for the advice, and I'll let you know what I find out...

I talked to the inspector, and he said I can put in a metal junction box and run some new romex up from the breaker box and connect the old wiring through that as long as I ground the new box and the old metal flex conduit.
He also said I didn't need the AFCI since New York hasn't mandated that as part of the electric code, and he also said there was recently a huge recall on AFCI breakers...
Thanks for the advice, and I'm glad this isn't turning into a MUCH larger project than we originally anticipated...
Thanks again!!!
