Help with switches
I am adding recessed lights and pendant lights in my kitchen. I am trying to have the recessed lights on one switch and the pendant lights controlled by another switch in the same box. When I removed the old light fixture I found that the junction box was filled with many cables. Inside the box there were 2 cables that came in from another place in the house 1 cable went to a light over the kitchen sink another cable went to the dining room switch and the last cable went to the switch for the kitchen. When I opened the kitchen switch I discovered that the switch was a 3-way and that there was 14/3 cable going out of that box and going to a dead end(the end of the 14/3 is now inside my dining room wall). I don't know where to go from here. I want to put a regular single pole switch in but the wiring in the box is confusing. All the white wires are connected in the juntion box and the white wire from the switch was connected to the black wires. How do I put in a regular switch and put another switch in that only controls the pendant lights?

The end of the 14/3 is inside of the wall. The previous owners must have done some remodeling and put it inside of the wall. I pulled on the cable from the ceiling and heard that it is a junction box cause it was sliding up and down inside of the wall.

You need to find the other end of the 14/3.
You cannot leave it hidden in the wall. You must find it and either eliminate it or make it permanently accessible.
