Open Ground

I have one that says open ground, does this indicate the ground in this wall receptacle is not hooked up.
Just have not had enought time to get to it but guess I will when it shocks the crap out of me.

(1) The receptacle was installed a long time ago before grounding was used, or
(2) The receptacle has a grounding connection that was never hooked up, or
(3) The receptacle was originally grounded but the grounding failed at some point.

Start by shutting off the breaker, pulling the receptacle out (without disconnecting anything), and see what you find.

Or someone extended an ungrounded circuit and the other end of the supply cable is not connected to ground.
