Installing new subpanel
ok i am installing a new subpanel for my attached garage it will have a 70 amp breaker feeding the subpanel with 4 gauge between the panels and from there it will split into 1 30 amp 220 circuit for the welder and 1 20 amp circuit for the regular outlets and 1 20 amp circuit for the lights
1. To power the subpanel do i neew 4 or 3 wires from the main panel (2 hot, ground and a nuetral)
2. My welder has a three prong twist lock plug what 3 wires need hooked to that is it the 2 hots plus a ground.

As John said, using larger wire doesn't hurt....as long as you make sure that the rest of the system matches. Conduit will need to be larger, the junction box will need to be larger, and you should double check that the receptacle that you are installing is designed for 8ga wire. Some L6-30 receptacles take #8, others only take #10.
