Accidentally bought a 3 way switch...

...when I needed a normal switch. Will it work for this purpose if the common screw is not connected to anything? TIA

Yes you can, but not in the way you guessed. Connect the two wires to the common screw and either of the other two screws. Experiment so that you get it so that up is on and down is off. If it operates incorrectly, either flip the switch over or change the wire from one traveler screw to the other.

Thanks John. I forgot to mention this was just a simple switch loop to a single outlet. I left the common screw open and the switch didn't work. I then saw your reply, so I moved one wire to the common screw and it now works. Thanks again.
