room/desk fan variable speed control
Can anybody advise me about an easy way of implementing some sort of variable speed control for a regular room/desk fan?
In simpler terms, if I have a fan such as this:

How can I add an external dial or knob so that the fan rotation speed can be adjusted incrementally instead of the 3 different speeds applied by using the 3-step switch?
I'd prefer to have the ability to adjust the speed to a lower speed than when the fan is on the low speed setting (1 instead of 2 or 3).
