What size breaker do i need?
I bought a electric grill that runs on 240V single phase.
It says it draws 7.9KW and 33 amps.
When it says 33 amps is that total? meaning each of the two leads carry 16 and 1/2 amps each or does it mean each lead draws 33amps each?
Do I need a double 20 or double 40 breaker?
Thanks
Doug

You need the size breaker specified in the manufacturers directions for this product.
33 amps at 240 volts means that each lead will need to carry 33 amps of current. This probably requires a 40 amp breaker.

You may be able to use a 40 amp breaker however, if this unit is to be plugged in it will require a 50 amp cord cap and breaker because the industry does not make a 40 amp cord cap. The price of upgrading is not that great and you would probably be safer in the long run.

Dennis:
You can use a "50 amp cord cap" on a 40 amp service. The rating is a maximum, not a minimum.
But, I would assume, (dangerous), that the grill is hardwired since it is probably for outdoors thereby needing a gfi circuit and a disconnect. If it were indoors that would not be the case. But we weren't let in on this mystery.
