pool light tripping breaker?

I have a Sta-Rite 500W pool light that is controlled by a Intermatic timer. When the light is switched off it trips the breaker. The breaker does not trip when the light is on, only when it is off. Any ideas? I am assuming that the light fixture needs to be replaced but I am not sure. Thanks.

Sounds like an improperly wired switch loop. The breaker is actually tripping when you turn the switch on. Tell us how the wires are connected at the light and the switch.

ged, some history would improve our guesses. Did this work perfectly for years and then one day just fail, with no changes? Or did somebody change something? Or did the origin of the problem coincide with some event?

could be several things, but leave the breaker that supplies current to the light off untill it is fixed . for your safety.

I turned off the power, pulled the light out of the niche and it was half full of water, so I drained the water out and re-adjusted the gasket and it has worked fine ever since then. Of course this was the day after I was the winning bidder of a new light fixture on ebay. Thanks for the suggestions and advice!

Replacing Pushmatic Breaker

I have a house built in 1961 using Bulldog panel with puchmatic breakers. The breakers are old and sometimes take me 4, 5 pushes to reset. I asked an electrician to replace and he said the 120V costs around $30 each and the 220V costs around $50 each. He said the other option is to replace the whole panel with new beakers that not pushmatic. So he leaves me with 2 options: replace each single breaker with a new pushmatic one; no city permit required or replace whole box with new switch on-off breakers; city permit required. I asked 2 other electricians and they said they can replace the inside of the box with new switch on-off breakers. They said they'd buy a new box, use the inside parts of new box to replace inside part of old box then I have new switches! I asked the first electrician why he didn't do this way then he said it violates the code. The other 2 electricians said they have done same thing to many customers with old pushmatic breakers and they are happy because they can buy new switch on-off breakers at cheaper prices if needed! Newbie: Need Advice on Durable/Wet/Dry Fan for under house....$900 estimate?

I have a 1939 home in Tampa, FL did an addition 5 years ago. My house went from 1300 S.F. to 2300 S.F. The home is on approx 1-2 piers and is a wood frame house. In the addition, I placed hardwood floors and there is insulation underneath the floors. Recently, I had an engineer over at the house who took a look underneath and said that the area under the addition has no circulation. He estimated that we need an electrical company to run electricity under the house that is completely insulated and install some fan that can handle getting wet which alone costs $400-$500. So, the total with his labor, electrician, etc... = $900. He said that not anybody can do this job because it is a liablility to run the electrical under a house next to insulation and risk water exposure. So, unless it is done properly, it is a fire hazard/risk. So, anybody have some advice, suggestions? $900 seems very very high. Thanks AnthonyRead More
