Question Will I overload my box?

Hi, I need to add a 15 amp circuit to me electrical box. The main switch is 2 tandem 100 amp circuits. There are various circuits for the house totaling 400 amps. I think I am missing something because it seems that with 2 100 amp circuits coming in there would be power for 200 amps total. What am i missing and will it be ok to add the circuit (there is space one space lift in the box for one additional circuit)? Thanks!

The answer is called "load diversity". Not everything in your house is ever loaded to the maximum at the same time. So often the breakers in the panel add up to four or more times the main breaker. In fact, if the breakers added up to no more than the main breaker, then the main breaker would be useless and could be omitted.
