bulbs blowing very frequently

I have a house built in 1986 and I have several areas in the house where the bulbs blow after only a couple of weeks. I even changed out one ceiling fan but it still blows bulbs. What's up?

Bulbs burn out quickly for a wide variety of reasons:
  • Vibration.
  • Too high of wattage for the fixture.
  • Fixture improperly mounted.
  • A lot of ambient heat.
  • Cheap bulbs.
  • Left on too long.
  • Moisture on a hot bulb.
  • Excessive voltage.
Here are some things that are all known to extend life:
  • Smaller wattage bulbs.
  • Compact fluorescents.
  • Dimmer switches.
  • Double-life bulbs.
  • Bulbs marked "vibration resistant".
  • Bulbs marked "130V".
  • Better brand bulbs.
Ceiling fans always need special bulbs designed especially for ceiling fans.

Just in case you have a problem with excessive voltage, you might use a voltmeter to monitor your voltage at various times of the day, various days of the week, and various locations in your house. If you encounter voltages above 130, you should call your power company first, and then an electrician.
