Circuit Alert reading......
I'm about to install new thermostats for 240v in wall heaters. I have tested the existing wiring with the 20 amp double pole breaker off and am getting mixed readings using a GB Circuit Alert tester. Part of a wire reads dead, if I move the tester to another part of the same wire it reads hot. With the breaker off the heater doesn't come on. Just want to be safe. Should I be using another type of tester? Thanks in advance......

Thanks Doug. I believe I have one of those. I assume that I place one probe on the ground wire in the box and the other probe on the bare end of the wire I want to test. Correct? Thanks again......

Yes. Test with power on first to make sure you have a good ground source and get a light. Then turn power off and test again. Be sure to test both wires from the 240 V line.
