Wall outlet/light switch

We have an outlet connected to a wall switch. We have boxed in the ceiling for a ceiling fan. How can we connect the ceiling fan light to the same switch as the outlet. It is black and white wiring.
Thank you.

This is an extremely common question, but the answer depends on a few things:
  1. Do you want the receptacle to be switched when you're done, unswitched, or don't you care?
  2. Does the switch control just one half of the receptacle, or both halves (go try it)?
  3. Do you want one switch, or do you want two switches (one for the fan motor and one for the fan light)?
  4. Is the switch a single-pole switch, or a 3-way switch?
  5. Shut off the breaker and open up the switch box? Is there a white wire connected to the switch? What colors are the wires connected to the switch? What other wires are in the box not connected to the switch?

This is a single switch. It is currently running directly to a recepticle in the wall. When you flip the switch the entire recep. is ready for use.
There are only two wires on the wall switch. One is black and one is white, plus the ground wire. All I would like to be able to do is flip the switch and the ceiling fan and light comes on, as well as keeping the recep. available. I would then use the chains on the fan to either shut off the light or the fan.

Yes, but when you flip it off, is the entire receptacle (both halves) dead?

as well as keeping the recep. available
Of course it will be "available", but do you want it to be controlled by the switch?

Please try again with questions (1) and (2) above.
