electrical tester question

I have a greenlee cmt 60 cat lll clamp type electrical tester. my question is how do I measure amperes with it I turned the dial to the proper setting clamped the clamp around a hot ac wire and got no reading. do I need to also do something with the test leads at the same time I have it clamped around the hot wire? I havent tried that for fear of ruining the tester. thanks for any answeres.

You can only clamp it around a single conductor. Clamping it around a Romex cable, for instance, will give you no reading. Test leads are not required for the AC amp test.

Your appliances draw the current when running.
If you don't have something plugged in and turned on the reading will be zero.
