wiring from a switch?

I have a switch that only operates the bottom half of an outlet.
Can I run new wire from that switch to to operate a light fixture?
I want the switch to operate the outlet and the new light fixture at the same time.

Deja vu.

This is an extremely common project. We get asked about this several times a week. If there is an attic above the room, it's a pretty straightforward project.

But before you start, you need to figure out how this thing is wired now (there are several possibilities). Here's how:
  1. Is there just one switch? Or are there a pair of 3-way switches at two entrances to the room?
  2. Does the switch control just one receptacle, or more than one receptacle.
  3. Now shut off the breaker.
  4. Open up the switch box and pull the switch out of the wall without disconnecting any wires. Tell us all the cables, all the wires and all the connections.
  5. Do the same in the receptacle box.

The answer is maybe. Do as John said to check the wires at the switch. If there is only one cable with 2 wires both connected to the switch you can 't do it.
