Whole house surge-protector

I have a whole house surge-protector...but...I lost the installation instructions.
Are these devices connected to the mains lugs...or must they be connected through a circuit breaker?
Thanks
Bill

Circuit breaker.
NEVER add wires to lugs, especially main breakers or lugs.

Check the company out online, most have pdfs of the instructions. What company and model number?

The residential units SEEM to suggest use of a circuit breaker for safety.

At least the residental intermatics (IG1240 &IG 3240), panamax (INS8002C), eaton/cutler-hammer (CHSP Ultra) that I looked at, had instructions for breakers. Grab the instructions to find out what size breaker they recomend. One did say a lug KIT can be used (panamax).

YMMV. And what I did, isn't nec. what you should do, I'm a hack.

Since you lost the instructions, remember to keep the arrester leads as short and straight as possible and avoid any sharp bends in the wire.

Actually the 2002 NEC updated this type of thing to state that you could not place the protector on the main lugs....so like speedy says dont do it but now the 2002 addresses it more clearly.
