Dumb question

What are sub-panels for? What are some scenarios behind why you'd need one?

Sub-panels allow you to have another electrical panel in a structure. Sometimes they make wiring easier, and sometimes they provide more space when the main panel is full. Bascially you have a 240 breaker in your main panel that feeds another panel, from which you can feed smaller circuits.

For example you might install a 60 amp sub panel in a detatched garage, and run a few 15 or 20 amp circuits from that. The benefit here is that you only had to run one feed out to the garage, and if any of the breakers trip, you can reset them from the garage.
