Wiring additional Smoke Detectors in basement

I'm in the process of finishing my basement and need to know the procedure for wiring two new smoke detectors required by code outside and inside the new bedroom. My permit states the new ones have to sound when any of the other detectors in the house go off. There is one existing detector at the bottom of the stairs. Can I tie into this one and wire them in series? Thanks.

If you must tie all your smoke detectors together so that one going off in the house sets them all off, then you MAY need to replace all your detectors. For this type of operation, all the smoke detectors must be wired together.

If your existing detectors are battery detectors, then you have your work cut out for you. You will have to run wires to all the detectors, and replace them all.

If, however, your existing detectors are already interconnected and electric, then you should be able to buy identical (or at least compatible) units and tie them into the current system.

Test it. Set off one in an upstairs bedroom. If the one in the basement also goes off, and I'm thinking it will, then you can definitely tie in there.
