wiring from dimmer switch to wall light fixture

Please help us with the following: We have had a licensed electrician install a dimmer switch. We are trying to install our light fixture and connect to this switch.

We connected black to black; white to white; and ground to ground. We are left with a pink wire. While the light works! the connection to the on/off dimmer does not. Have tried with pink in with white, and this doesn't work either.

THanks

Is this "pink" wire from the fixture or does it come into the box along with the white, black, and ground? If it comes into the box along with the other wires it is likely that (1) it is actually a red wire, not pink and (2) it is your switched power. Try connecting the black from the fixture to this red wire and cap off the black wire.

thanks Mike a further question

Yes the "pink" wire comes from the box, not the fixture. It is a hot pink wire, but will interpret as red. If we connect to the black from the fixture, do we cap the black from the box on it's own, or include it.

Cap the black on its own. If you include it you will bypass the switch.
