Loose Receptacles

Greetings:

I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for securing receptacles that are loose due to sloppy sheetrock installation. The problem is that the sheetrock installer cut the openings too large for the boxes (which are recessed at least 3/8").

I know that ultimately the best solution would be to cut the boxes out and mount them properly flush with the sheetrock, but I'd prefer not to go that route if there is another practical solution.

I tried using spec-grade receptacles that have slightly larger tabs, and they were still just barely too short.

Are there any box extender-like products to accomplish this? Other ideas?

The junction boxes should not be recessed that far. Fix them. Yes, they do make box extenders.

I've seen 1-1/2" box extenders, but never anything less than 1". Are there 1/4 or 3/8" extenders?

Yes. You may have to go to an electrical supply house.

I think they sell spacers that you can place behind the screws to tighten up the receptacles. We have used metal nuts on some of ours so they don't wiggle after adding a tile backsplash in a kitchen. We have also used the box extenders and they work well for larger gaps.

You could try one of these

There are also various depth box shims available, but I have only seen these at Home Depot. They range from 1/4" to 3/4" depths.
