Thermostat Wiring - no markings

We are attempting to install a Honeywell CT2800 programmable thermostat. The new instructions tell us to mark the wires by letter on the old stat, but not according to colour.

The existing stat is a mercury job, with no letter markings for the wires. Presuming the black wire is the power wire, where does the white wire go? The furnace is gas powered, without air conditioning.

Thanks for any help.

Perfect! We suspected as much, but didn't want to take a chance.

Thanks for your speedy response. It's amazing how chilly it's getting so quickly ...
