where are the coils

How can I find out where the coils are my radiant ceiling system?

I have heard wet the ceiling, turn up the heat...where it dries is the coil...would this assume that all the coils are in working order.

Also use a cable tracer (not sure what that cost).

Any other methods?

This works, but yes, only finds working cables. Some non contact electrical testers will work and might find nonfunctioning cables. They're available at most hardware and home improvement stores for under $20. One more thought, if you have access above the ceiling, you might try pushing some of the insulation back to see if the coils or heat panels are visible there. Some of these systems are/were installed between the sheetrock and the insulation.
